After last year, where temperatures had already reached 24 degrees by 9am, Windsor Triathlon 2018 was a much cooler affair. Two members of the club, Rob Baylis and Louise Croxson decided they fancied racing with the big guns of Stuart Hayes, Emma Pallant and Michelle Dillon at the ungodly hour of a 6am start. This race was over the shorter Sprint distance and the first wave of the day before the Age Group Sprint racers of Jon Elliot, Susan Tansey and Jenny Wilson followed shortly after. Both Rob and Louise, had they been in their own AG wave would have won, so BTS can claim to victories in the very first race of the day! This was backed up by podium places for Jon and Susan in their age groups.

Once the Olympic waves started at around 6:30, the conversation had been about how all the women of the club would fair against each other and where on the course they may or may not overlap. Previous age group winner Lynda Hart set off with Gemma Korff, the returning Laura Baylis and Angie Lyons-Redman. They were followed by the fast swimming Kate Robinson and Abby Settle a few minutes later. The story is that Abby and Kate swam side by side, and late into the swim actually swam OVER Lynda and Gemma in the melee of overlapping waves which also saw Karen Wright catching Angie – not that you would necessarily know when everyone is thrashing through the Thames upstream!

Once on the bike Kate set off to try and maximise her gap, knowing the others would likely be chasing her down on the run. Unfortunately Abby was only ever going to do 2/3 of the event due to a run preventing injury.

Gemma was also struggling with an injury and the arrival of the rain on the bike course did not help anyone’s cause – it was supposed to be dry!

So onto the run and with everyone perhaps more spread out that originally thought the job became to monitor your position against other BTS and pick off anyone in your AG that you could. Probably as expected, Lynda Hart took home the win in her new 4549 AG by a comfortable margin. Kate meanwhile was delighted with 2nd in the 3034 AG behind a former Elite racer and a top 10 overall.

In the men’s race there were also a couple of BTS rivalries, both within AG and across the club. Reigning 2017 AG Champs Paul Fitzpatrick (4044) and Chris Dollimore (4549) were going head to head over the Olympic distance for the first time this year after an unfortunate bike crash at Deva for Chris curtailed their last encounter. Hitting the water some 50 mins later, Chairman Ed Nunn was taking on Kuba Faglio in the 3034 AG. Ed and Chris both knew that they relied on their superior bike power to make up a defecit from the swim, especially with a route change had added around 3km to the length of the bike leg, further playing to their advantage.  That’s exactly what happened with  the protagonists within each respective battle hitting T2 within a minute of each other (In Paul and Chris’ case, mere seconds) and also close in terms of the time for all 4 vs each other.

Onto the run and Paul slowly wound Chris in over the first lap and then held on to lead over the remaining 7k to claim the 4549 crown with Chris 2nd. Meanwhile, very similar run times for Ed and Kuba meant the bike advantage stuck and Ed came away with the podium finish in the 3034 with Kuba in 5th.

Across the Olympic race, BTS clocked 13 Top 10 Age Group positions, with notable results for Tom Korff returning to Olympic Tri to take 7th in the 4549 age group, a win by a massive 19 minutes for Dave Green in 6569 and the ever reliable Tom Rylance, winning the 8084 age group! RESULTS below.
